Laughter Project

 

《Laughter Project》is an experimental interactive installation project, exploring how something as simple as laughter could express and represent complex multilayered psychological activity in terms of science. By using computer and software to extract the laughter out of the original contexts and transfer it into a device that was then placed in a gallery, the device will react to the audience with different laughter. Extracting the laughter from everyday-life without any set-up or context turns the laughter into a metaphor of both entertainment and perfunctory. The artist wants to explore the connection between AI, human emotion and suggestive projection, bringing people attention to the supremacy of entertainment in the current society.

 

《Laughter Project》is a cold but playful interactive installation. The name of the work came from probably the most famous sound effect, "Canned laughter" created by Charles Douglass. A full metal case with an eye-catching mirror finishing, placed in the middle of a 10-15 square meter sealed display room. When the audience enters the space with a mindset of reading the art, filling the room with chatter, the device will stay inactive and become completely neutral to the audience but once the chatter is gone, when the only sound that echos in the room are silence, the device will assume the atmosphere has entered a state of boredom and start playing random laughter to 'reactivate' the deadlock situation. The laughter that was inserted in the system came from the record of the artist's conversations with others in different situations, soap opera, entertainment programs and also from laughter donations.

《Laughter Project》exagerated the natural or maybe deliberate action of laughing, 

exposing what the artist called the laughter effect, reflecting how the current society is over-relying on being entertained.

Installation Project Outline:-

Space settings

‧A white room of 10-15 square meters with warm light grey carpet

‧A white plinth about 70cm height, 30cmx 30cm square, in the middle of the room.

‧Laff Box ( placed on the plinth)

‧Four temperature sensitive sensors fitted in the four conners of the room to switch on and off the device.

 

-About “Laughter Box” 

The Laughter Box is named after a mysterious device initially invented by American sound engineer Charles Douglass widely used in the post editing  between 1950s and 1970s. The original model is believed to be a sophisticated compositive “canned laughter” producer for TV shows and sitcoms sweetening. Laughters are manufactured and laid in to heighten atmosphere as well as filling up awkwardly plain moments so to match up standard time length, it was then taken place by digital post editing technic.  

 

-Using computer programming and processing, here the concept of “Laughter Box” is altered and transformed from his original practical function to a symbol of the entertainment oriented industry and, to certain extend, entertainment supremacism in the consumeristic world. On the other hand and more importantly  It celebrates the nature of being able to laugh at ourselves and self-deprecating even in this transitional period of our time.

 

It's appearance is designed to be a minimal obscure (neutral) cubic shape then perfectly polished into a mirror-like metal box. A speaker is fixed inside along with a mini computer installed with a comprehensive collection of various laughter recorded from everyday life by the artists as well as public donation. (laughterdonation@gmail.com)

 

 

Every time when audiences walk into the space, sensors in the showing room will activate the device into observation mode. As Long as there are human voices in the room( discussing, chatting about the work or having any conversation), the Box will remain silent till it detects uncomfortable/ awkward/ indeterminate silence in the room. The box will then trigger random laughter from the data base to play. Once the audiences start conversations again, the device will be switched back to observation mode.
