Description

"Western Dream" is a film shot in Qing Tao, one of the most rapidly urbanizing city on the east coastline of China, where residential houses were built in an shockingly vast scale and mostly used for real estate investment purpose rather than truly functioning as people’s accommodations. The simple structuralist and utilitarian architectural model was initially influenced by Russian revolution which was aiming to benefit the mass society and achieving an ideal social equality. However, through the ages of economic growth and urban gentrification, the appearance of those building has been transformed into a peculiar mixture of the then-considered bourgeois decorations and monumental imitations of western classical. Like many of those new or halfway built apartments, this block has been neglected for years for some reason, Locals, whom used to be pensants here gradually sneaked in the all over fenced courtyard  and made an almost communist utopian inside. They each ‘adopted’ a building and relocated essential farming equipments in different luxurious lobbies and meeting rooms-to-be. They’ve been growing their vegetables and wheat outside in the well divided courtyard field.  I’ve been always curious about this enormous ghostly block and wondered what was inside, let along hearing rumors about it spread around. Until one day I finally took the initiative to climb over the fence and checked it out. And what I found in there truly stroke me, the way how it evolved naturally as a self-contained organism despite of the dramatically raised market price, the pavilion was like a isolated kingdom paralleling with the reality. Furthermore, I see it as a somehow unique trace of Chinese anthropological and cultural identity

The rapid transformation of China has changed the landscape but, apparently, not the way of living neither the deeply embedded philosophy that’s been inherited from the past. And perhaps by contextualizing the past, we would be able to find a better way to understand the present and future.
